Revelation Plans to Unveil OpenInsight 9.0; New Release to be Featured in Fall 2008 Training

Revelation Software plans to introduce the next major release of OpenInsight in the fourth quarter of this year. OpenInsight, Revelation's flagship product, is a repository-based applications development environment that enables development teams to work collaboratively to design, develop, deploy and scale high-performance business solutions.

A key element of the 9.0 release will be Web OI, which has two important capabilities, Mike Ruane, president and CEO of Revelation, told 5 Minute Briefing. “It lets existing developers of OpenInsight applications take their existing forms and support routines and transfer them to the Web with a minimum amount of work,” he said. Additionally, he noted, “it lets them - from an entirely Web-based platform - design screens, tables, reports, etc., and build the Web-based application there that goes against the OpenInsight engine and database.” Other product features in OpenInsight 9.0 will include a new forms designer, as well as a new look and feel, said Bob Catalano, director of sales.

Revelation also announced its fall training class schedule, running from September through December. Courses range from Introduction to OpenInsight, to Advanced Topics in OpenInsight, as well as classes specifically focused on What's New in OpenInsight 9.0.

“In just counting programs that already exist in OpenInsight that we had to modify, we had over 3,600 different programs or entities that were changed,” noted Ruane. “In the Web OI product, because it is Web-based, we have a couple of hundred design templates, help screens, menus, examples, so it is an overwhelming amount of change. Unless someone actually spends time to show what is new, people will not know about it. And it is a lot more than we can show by doing an on-site road show or just a quick demonstration,” Ruane said. About two hours of the overview course on OpenInsight 9.0 will be devoted to Web OI, with more concentrated training classes to be held following the release, Catalano added.

Revelation also wrapped up its annual users conference in Las Vegas in May. Next year's show is likely to be held in Austin, TX, said Ruane. For more details on the Revelation's fall training schedule and a recap of the 2008 conference, go here.

GoldenGate Software Solution is Validated to Operate on HP BladeSystem

GoldenGate Software, a provider of high availability and real-time data integration solutions, announced that its software has been validated to run on the HP BladeSystem.  The GoldenGate solution improves availability and lowers risk for applications running on HP BladeSystems while enabling the real-time integration of critical data for reporting and analysis across diverse applications, within a single HP BladeSystem enclosure.

At the recent HP Technology Forum & Expo 2008 in Las Vegas, “that was the buzz in our booth,” Chris McAllister, senior director of product management for GoldenGate, told 5 Minute Briefing, observing that many customers asked if GoldenGate software would be able to run on the blades architecture. “It looks as if they have really hit a homerun within that community.”

Over 50 percent of GoldenGate's customers run a NonStop within their environment and the blades architecture that HP has just come out with furthers of that processing line, "so what they are basically getting is twice the processing power in the same size footprint,” said McAllister. “A lot of the companies that were looking to move off the NonStop into some other environment are now saying: Why would I do that - all my applications run on it, I am getting the performance that I am looking for, and certainly the price points that I was looking for by moving off.”

By standardizing on a HP BladeSystem for mission-critical applications, customers benefit from high performance, scalable and reliable infrastructure and can train critical IT resources to manage and maintain a single system that meets a variety of business needs, stated GoldenGate.  Additionally, the with GoldenGate's ability to work within a diverse environment, customers achieve lower total cost of ownership and can roll out new application capabilities at a faster rate.

"With GoldenGate's validation on HP BladeSystem and its offering portfolio, we now support the widest range of database, hardware and OS versions, and are completely supported on  the HP BladeSystem platform,” said McAllister. With GoldenGate Transactional Data Management technology and HP BladeSystem, customers have the ability to grow and extend their HP technology investment over the long-term, he added. Fortinet Acquires IPLocks Assets

Fortinet, a provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions, yesterday announced it has acquired IPLocks' database security products and technologies as part of a strategy to broaden Fortinet's network security portfolio. Fortinet has purchased IPLocks' vulnerability assessment tool, source code and related physical assets, as well as a broad license to IPLocks' database monitoring and auditing tools. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

IPLocks is a privately-held company that provides database security and compliance solutions to help guard against common database attacks, monitor database usage, alert on suspicious activities and identify fraudulent or malicious events. The tools assist enterprises in protecting internal data as well as meeting regulatory compliance requirements. In acquiring IPLocks' database security tools, Fortinet sought to expand its security product portfolio to address a growing need to protect database applications, which are becoming a target of internal and external attack.

"As we continue to innovate solutions for securing networks and applications, we believe the IPLocks acquisition will bring an even greater benefit to our customers by hardening the protection of their databases for a security approach that penetrates more deeply into the network - to the application level,” said Ken Xie, founder, president and CEO of Fortinet, in making the announcement. ParAccel and Pentaho Team Up to Provide Analytic DB and BI Solution Set

ParAccel, provider of the ParAccel Analytic Database, a high-speed columnar database management system, and Pentaho Corp., a commercial open source alternative for business intelligence, announced a partnership to deliver a high performance, integrated database platform and BI environment for analytic applications. The integration of the ParAccel Analytic Database and Pentaho's BI suite is intended to provide organizations with a cost-effective, end-to-end solution for analyzing and reporting on business-critical information at high speeds, to support improved decision-making.

The partnership will offer customers “a complete suite of tools integrated into the ParAccel database,” Rick Glick, vice president of technology and architecture, ParAccel, told 5 Minute Briefing. “Pentaho offers a suite of tools and what we are working on is making sure that each of those integrates in with the fundamental scalability story that we have in the database world.”

The companies will continue over time “to optimize certain key pieces and make that interoperability and integration story deeper and richer,” said Glick. “The beauty of using tools that adhere to open standards is that you get functionality right out of the box - and then you can build it in deeper as opportunities allow,” added Kim Stanick, vice president of marketing, ParAccel.

According to ParAccel, its Analytic Database uses a columnar approach with massively parallel processing and patent-pending performance techniques to deliver significant performance and price-performance gains over other database management systems. The Pentaho Open BI Suite provides a range of business intelligence capabilities, including reporting, analysis, dashboards, data mining and data integration.

The partnership addresses the need for pervasive BI and the fact that many more constituencies within organizations are finding BI valuable, noted Stanick. The majority of BI tools to date have been either cumbersome or not comprehensive and most have also not provided the necessary affordability, she said. Vertica Systems Announces New Program for Software and Hardware Partners

Vertica Systems has l
aunched a new partner program, “Powered by Vertica,” to make it easy for enterprise software and hardware partners to embed the Vertica Analytic Database into their solutions.

By giving ISVs, OEMs and SaaS partners the ability to embed Vertica’s grid-based, column-oriented analytic database within their solutions, they can differentiate from competitors and provide value to their customers by enabling them to analyze more data with rapid response times while running on low-cost “green grids” of industry standard servers, the vendor said.

From the beginning, Vertica has been focused on “empowering” not only end-users but also ISVs, “who have a lot more data now because they are dealing with event-level transactions and are interested in a very high performing analytic engine to be part of their applications,” Colin Mahony, senior director of business development for Vertica, told 5 Minute Briefing. “This is a great program for ISVs to seamlessly integrate and embed the Vertica Analytic Database,” said Mahony.

Powered by Vertica partners include OpenService which is using the Vertica Analytic Database in its LogCenter application to offer customers real-time security compliance reporting based on large volumes of data continuously collected from security sensors. Other Vertica partners such as LogiXML, Streambase, Nmetrics, Nuvola Software and Integra, are embedding the Vertica Analytic Database to manage network performance, retail transactions, call detail records, Web clickstreams, market history and many other types of data.

The Powered by Vertica Program includes development licenses, porting assistance, support and flexible revenue sharing options for qualified partners.

According to Vertica, its Analytic Database has a shared-nothing architecture, which allows partners’ customers to grow their implementations by adding additional server nodes to a cluster rather than face rip and replace upgrades. There is also special pricing for partners to enable them to match Vertica licensing to their billing models.

Vertica runs on any off-the-shelf x86-based Linux server. Vertica is also available hosted in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. To learn more about the program and partner pricing and support, go here.
