IBM Announces Data Deduplication for Mainframe Environments
Posted Mar 8, 2010 - March 8, 2010 Issue Print Version     Page 1of 1

IBM announced a data deduplication solution for z/OS mainframe environments. The System Storage TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z combines IBM's virtual tape library (VTL) technology with its HyperFactor inline data deduplication software.

The TS7680 is a data protection platform designed to quickly and safely protect business information while reducing the amount of space required for storage. The solution combines a virtual tape library solution, inline data deduplication powered by IBM's HyperFactor technology, and disk-based storage options to provide users an optimal disk-based target for Systems z applications that traditionally use tape.

Designed to simplify tape processing operations and improve tape application performance, the TS7680 offers high-performance inline data deduplication, highly available two-node clustering and up to 1 petabyte of physical storage capacity per system. Virtual tape systems are seen by the mainframe as a standard tape library, and thus existing processes and procedures need not be changed to accommodate the new technology.
