TechWeb Webcast: All About Deadlocks on August 11, 2010 @ 9:00 AM IST

You must have seen them at least once: "ORA-60 Deadlock Detected." It's purely an application design issue, right? Wrong; there are several more causes of deadlocks - not just two sessions waiting on each other to commit, as it is commonly understood. This session will explain other causes of deadlocks such as FK violations, bitmap indexes, direct path writes and so on. It will start with the explanation of deadlocks and why they occur; but then quickly go into the advanced topics such as how to read the seemingly cryptic deadlock trace files, how to generate more diagnostic information using specialized events, and how to write your code to avoid or reduce the occurrence of deadlocks. Finally, it will end with some unconventional deadlock issues and how to handle them.

The webcast is presented by Arup Nanda, the lead DBA at Starwood Hotels, who has been an Oracle DBA for 14 years, with experience spanning all aspects of the DBA tasks from modeling to performance tuning to backup/recovery, disaster recovery and security. He frequently presents at Oracle-related conferences, writes regularly for publications like OTN, and has co-authored four books on Oracle. He was the recipient of the coveted "DBA of the Year" award from Oracle in 2003.

This is a free webcast but you must register to attend.
