Oracle has announced the availability of its next-generation Oracle Cloud Platform services featuring built-in autonomous capabilities, including Oracle Mobile Cloud Enterprise, Oracle Data Integration Platform Cloud, and Oracle API Platform Cloud. With embedded artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning that enable autonomous capabilities in the Platform Cloud services, Oracle says it is helping organizations to more easily develop new user experiences with chatbot and voice capabilities, to enable business users to perform intelligent data integration tasks, and to expose business logic and data via robust API design/management.

At DataWorks Summit, its conference in San Jose this week, Hortonworks is unveiling a major new release of the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) as well as expanded partnerships with Microsoft, Google, and IBM. A priority for Hortonworks with HDP 3.0 is to make hybrid cloud deployments easier for customers, said Scott Clinton, vice president of product marketing at Hortonworks, who spoke to DBTA before the company's announcement.

Tableau Software has acquired Empirical Systems, an AI startup that originated at the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project. Based in Cambridge, Mass., Empirical Systems has a team of engineers and data science professionals who created an analysis platform that helps customers to automatically analyze and understand their structured data. Empirical was co-founded by CEO Richard Tibbetts, who previously co-founded StreamBase (acquired by TIBCO); engineering lead Madeleine Thompson, formerly of Google; and scientific advisor Vikash Mansinghka, who leads the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project.

At GTC Taiwan today NVIDIA introduced HGX-2, a unified computing platform for both artificial intelligence and high performance computing. According to NVIDIA, the HGX-2 cloud server platform provides unique flexibility to support the future of computing, enabling high-precision calculations using FP64 and FP32 for scientific computing and simulations, while also providing FP16 and Int8 for AI training and inference. The result is a level of versatility that meets the requirements of the growing number of applications that combine HPC with AI, according to the company.

With the E.U.'s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set to go into effect in less than 2 weeks, new research shows U.S. companies are still unprepared.  The research garnered responses from U.S. companies with annual revenue greater than $10 million regarding their understanding of and preparedness for GDPR, uncovering two areas where companies are significantly exposed to legal risk by these new regulations. Penalties go into effect on May 25, 2018, and non-compliant organizations risk triggering fines up to 20 euros million or 4% of global revenue, whichever is higher.
