DBTA's Big Data Boot Camp provided attendees with an immersion experience in the world of big data. Presentations and panel discussions with data experts covered the value provided by Hadoop and related solutions, how it all fits into the overall enterprise data management picture, real-world use cases in which big data technologies are now being deployed, how to get started, the legal implications of big data management that organizations need to be aware of before they initiate a big data project, and how to successfully engage with customers through social media. Ten salient points emerged from the two-day conference which wrapped up at the Hilton New York on Wednesday.
Many argue that for big data to truly matter, you need some serious computing power and some data scientist wizards with mathematical prowess. While the volume of big data certainly can present challenges, there is also the velocity and variety of it to consider. Variety is actually the biggest concern and issue for most organizations that find it difficult to track, correlate and glean insight from data that's coming from so many diverse sources.
Three things people need to think about in a big data implementation are persistence, context and access, John O'Brien, founder and principal, Radiant Advisors, told attendees during his keynote, "The Big Data Paradigm," at DBTA's Big Data Boot Camp. O'Brien's talk provided an overview of the technologies and issues that attendees would learn about during the conference which took place this week in New York City. Following the opening address, David Jonker, senior director, Big Data Marketing, SAP, highlighted the results of a new big data survey, the "2013 Big Data Opportunities Survey," which revealed a variety of practical approaches that organizations are adopting to manage and capitalize on big data.

Talend, a global open source software provider, has released version 5.3 of its integration platform, scaling the integration of data, application and business processes of any complexity. Talend version 5.3 reduces the skill sets and development costs necessary to leverage big data and Hadoop by enabling integration developers without specific expertise to develop on big data platforms. "The big challenge that organizations are facing today is not about getting the data; it's not about the platform to explore it; it's really about people who are operating the platform. There is a big shortage of developers with big data and Hadoop skills, and a big shortage of data scientists," Yves de Montcheuil, vice president of marketing at Talend, tells DBTA
NuoDB, Inc., a provider of a cloud data management system offering SQL compliance and guaranteed ACID transactions, has introduced the NuoDB Starlings Release 1.1. Following on from its 1.0 release in January, NuoDB's Starlings Release 1.1 focuses on overall usability in three key areas, Seth Proctor, NuoDB chief architect, tells DBTA. The enhancements focus on greater Microsoft Windows support, general performance and stability, and an improved development and management experience in the web console, says Proctor.
What does it mean to be a "real-time enterprise"? It means having a well-connected organization, free of the shackles of siloed and slow-moving data environments. It means being able to compete in today's hyper-competitive economy by giving decision makers immediate access to the right information, at the right time.
Gazzang, a provider of data security solutions, has released Gazzang CloudEncrypt, offering data encryption and key management at every stage of the Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) data lifecycle. Gazzang CloudEncrypt secures data in-flight and at-rest within Amazon EMR environments while allowing customers to maintain control of the massive volume of encryption keys and separate those keys from the data itself.
Cloudant, a provider of a globally distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS), has announced $12 million in series B funding from Devonshire Investors, the private equity firm affiliated with Fidelity Investments; RackspaceHosting, the open cloud leader; and Toba Capital. The company also announced that current investors — Avalon Ventures, In-Q-Tel, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation — purchased additional shares. The funding will be used to support Cloudant's global expansion and grow the company's support, service, and go-to-market strategies.
EdgeSpring, a visual analytics and business intelligence provider, has announced the general availability of its BI and analytics platform, designed to allow users to draw business insights from data of any size or structure without dependence on analysts or IT specialists. The company has raised $11 million in series A financing from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) and Lightspeed Ventures.
Key findings from a new study, "Big Data Opportunities," will be presented at Big Data Boot Camp at the Hilton New York. Big Data Boot Camp will kick off at 9 am on Tuesday, May 21, with a keynote from John O'Brien, founder and principal of Radiant Advisors, on the dynamics and current issues being faced in today's big data analytic implementations. Directly after the opening address, David Jonker, senior director of Big Data Marketing, SAP, will showcase the results of the new big data survey, which revealed a variety of practical approaches that organizations are adopting to manage and capitalize on big data. The study was conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., and sponsored by SAP.
At SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando, SAP AG unveiled SAP HANA service pack 6 (SP6). In a key new capability, HANA now enables real-time insights across heterogeneous systems - including Hadoop. In addition, there are new geospatial capabilities, as well as a new open hardware architecture deployment model for tailored integration with customers' existing data centers. The added capabilities are part of a continued expansion of HANA as platform, and will be available by the end of this quarter, David Jonker, senior director of Big Data Marketing, SAP, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Index Engines, an enterprise information management and archiving solutions vendor, has released the Catalyst Data Profiling Engine, providing a cost- and time-effective solution to big data issues. Processing all forms of unstructured files and document types, it creates a searchable index of what exists, where it's located, who owns it, when it was last accessed and what key terms are in it. This information is provided through summary reports for immediate insight into enterprise storage.
Computer games have been front-runners in many important developments in the IT industry, including digital distribution, cloud storage, user driven design, and crowd sourcing. So it's not surprising that game developers are in a leading position when it comes to big data analytics and machine learning. Online games have the ability to monitor all aspects of player behavior, so, just as Google is able to refine your search results by analyzing your previous searches and comparing them to the billions of searches done every day, online game companies are able to modify game behavior to ensure a more optimal game experience by observing what works - and what doesn't - in the gamer's world.
IBM unveiled new business process and integration software and services that will help organizations accelerate adoption of big data, cloud, mobile and social business technologies. At the cornerstone of this strategy is IBM MessageSight, a new appliance designed to help organizations manage and communicate with the billions of mobile devices and sensors found in systems such as automobiles, traffic management systems, smart buildings and household appliances.

As machines increasingly are fitted with internet and other network access, enterprises will be able to capture and increasingly expected to respond to more customer data than ever before. Machine-to-machine (M2M) network connections—this so-called "Internet of Things"—is positioned to become the next source of major competitive advantage. Whatever you call it, M2M is turning out to be the poster child for big data's "Three Vs": Volume, Velocity and Variety. What M2M data requires is a fourth "V" (Visualization) to convert its big data into value by giving users the ability to identify data patterns through real-time analytics.
Adding to its list of recent acquisitions (Pervasive, Versant), Actian Corp. a big data management vendor, announced the purchase of ParAccel, a leader in high-performance analytics. The acquisition adds Amazon, The Royal Bank of Scotland, OfficeMax and MicroStrategy to Actian's big data customer portfolio.
