Red Hat shareholders voted to approve the acquisition by IBM, bringing it closer to closing in the second half of 2019. Commenting on the vote, Steve Robinson, GM of Red Hat Synergy, IBM, said: "Together, IBM and Red Hat will be strongly positioned to lead in hybrid cloud, addressing growing demand for companies to securely move their business applications to an open, multi-cloud environment."

For some time now, the majority of open source investment has come from venture capital and mega-corporations. There is good reason to think that this level of patronage will not persist indefinitely. Should VC-funded open source companies fail to return on investment, then VC investment will dry up.  The high-profile companies bolstering open source do so primarily for selfish motives and can't necessarily be relied on to do so forever.  So it's essential that companies that develop and market open source products be able to generate some return on their investment.

As cloud adoption gains traction, one of the obvious questions is whether to simply lift and shift or also modernize an application's data tier. Modernization can mean many things. In the simplest form, modernization may involve upgrading to newer versions or incorporating a new feature set such as consolidation in Oracle using the multitenant option. At the other end of the spectrum, it might involve a complete re-envisioning, involving a move to a cloud-native data storage service.
