Gartner Predicts 2016: Five Key Trends Driving Enterprise Architecture Into the Future

Digital business has spawned five overarching trends that will drive business change over the next decade or more. These distinct business and technology trends are, in turn, driving changes to the role of enterprise architects. Technology innovation is the No. 1 priority for EA through 2016. Here’s what Gartner says you can expect by 2017:

  • 20% of EA will be responsible for identifying new business designs that leverage business algorithms
  • 75% of organizations will have a bimodal capability with rock-solid conventional capabilities of IT
  • Business ecosystem models that use predictive analytics for expected business value

According to Gartner, Enterprise Architecture is key to identifying the opportunities to leverage emerging technologies and drive digital strategy. In our 2014 predictions for EA, we stated, "By 2016, 30% of global organizations will establish a clear role distinction between foundational and vanguard enterprise architects." Leading organizations indicate we are on track with this trend, and we expect more organizations will embrace the role of vanguard EA in the future.
