The Changing Role of the DBA

The DBA role will continue to exist. Somebody needs to understand the data, design data storage to meet business requirements, support operations, security and change management, manage backup and recovery and manage DBMS performance. Relation technology has been good at incorporating new ideas and facilities, and while some new technologies move away from relation, it will not be replaced any time soon. To offset the effects of adding more platforms and reducing head count, cross-platform administrative and performance tools can improve productivity and reduce errors and training time for new platforms.
