Red Hat Releases Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, Update 5

Red Hat, Inc. has announced the availability of the fifth update to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5. Adding features designed to operate across physical, virtual and cloud deployments, the update offers enhanced virtualization and interoperability capabilities, combined with support for important new hardware platforms including the POWER7 and Nehalem-EX processors while retaining support for existing processor platforms (mainframe, Itanium, Nehalem-EP, etc.).

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 is the first version of RHEL that offers support for the new IBM POWER7 processor-based family of IBM Power Systems servers. RHEL 5.5 also provides support for PowerVM Lx86, which simplifies migration of Linux x86 applications, enabling customers to realize the energy and administration savings of consolidation; and IBM Installation Toolkit for Linux V4.1, which provides a set of tools that significantly simplifies the installation of Linux on Power servers.

As with all Red Hat updates, application compatibility and certification with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 platform is fully maintained, meaning the broad portfolio of certified applications for Red Hat Enterprise Linux applies to the new update. This Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 update is available to subscribing customers via Red Hat Network.
