Visual Numerics, Inc., part of Rogue Wave Software, and a producer of advanced numerical analysis and visualization software, today announced an OEM partnership with Sybase. Visual Numerics offers two product lines: the IMSL Numerical Libraries for powerful mathematical and statistical analysis and the PV-WAVE visual data analysis development environment. As part of the OEM partnership, Sybase is embedding multiple IMSL Library time series analysis functions into Sybase RAP - The Trading Edition Enterprise, a unified market analytics platform that lets capital markets firms make more intelligent, efficient use of data for better analytics, decisions and reporting across the front-to-back office trade lifecycle.
While IMSL is a very large product with a lot of different functionality, Sybase is using a subset of the functions for Sybase RAP - The Trading Edition Enterprise, Dr. Edward Stewart, IMSL product manager at Visual Numerics, tells 5 Minute Briefing.
Specifically, new capabilities enabled by IMSL Library functions will allow users to examine and cleanse time series data, fit data to models, and perform model fit diagnostics. These capabilities allow for more complex modeling, improved backtesting, and faster intra-day risk and compliance reporting. By embedding the time series analysis capabilities, Sybase also provides RAP users with the ability to do all this with a single platform, eliminating the challenges inherent in integrating multiple vendor solutions.
The benefit to users is that they can continue to work within that time series framework all within the database, notes Stewart. Sybase customers are dealing with rapidly growing volumes of time series data. By embedding the time series functionality customers need Sybase can provide the ability to analyze time series data in-database, so the analysis is much faster and more efficient than using external tools.
This is the latest OEM agreement through which Visual Numberics' IMSL Numerical Libraries are being embedded. "We have been in business since 1970 and the OEM market has been a growth area for us, especially recently, over the last couple of years, but it is certainly a very common practice," says Stewart. "In fact, a lot of end user applications that have some kind of heavy statistical need may be using IMSL behind the scenes and their end users may not even know it."
