CA ERwin Data Modeler r9.5 Adds New Big Data Platform Support

CA has introduced the latest release of ERwin Data Modeler, a solution for collaboratively visualizing and managing business data across the enterprise in support of data governance, big data analytics, business intelligence and other initiatives.

The new release addresses two major objectives – the need to manage more data across more platforms, and to easily share that data with an expanding number of users with a range of roles and skill sets, said Donna Burbank, vice president, Product Marketing, Data Management, CA Technologies.

ERwin r9.5 includes support for big data technologies such as Apache Hadoop Hive, Cloudera and Google BigQuery, driving integration and a centralized view of both the traditional and newer data sources now impacting business decision-making. CA has been hearing from customers that their biggest pain point is taking data from relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, IBM DB2, SAP Sybase ASE, and integrating that data with data from new sources, said Burbank. The new support for big data technologies will help companies achieve an inventory of all their data structures. “Our historic strength has been on all the disparate relational databases. No matter what the database is we can get the structures for that. What is new is integrating the big data so you can get both of those in one place.”

The other pain point organizations are facing now, said Burbank, is the ability to see all the information, and then once they have it,  communicate it out to end users. Addressing this need, a new report designer in CA ERwin facilitates better visualization and sharing of information across the enterprise and among a broad range of both business and technical users.

More and more, CA is hearing from customers that ERwin is being used as a hub, providing a single, consistent view of information from all relevant sources for all the information management initiatives including data governance and business intelligence, said Burbank. They have always used ERwin as a tool to manage their databases, but now they are increasingly looking for it to be that “one-stop shopping tool for all information,” she noted.

The new release is certified on the latest versions of Teradata, a database software application for data warehouses and analytic applications, including big data. Teradata Corp., a CA Technologies partner, offers a number of industry models based in CA ERwin.
