Couchbase Introduces 'Engagement Database'

With customer experience expected to overtake price and product as the key brand differentiator by 2020, Couchbase contends that a new category of database that enables enterprises to continually create and reinvent the customer experience is critical.

Addressing this new requirement, Couchbase has introduced what it describes as an "Engagement Database." Unlike traditional databases, Couchbase says the new Engagement Database taps into dynamic data, at any scale and across any channel or device, to enable strategic use of data to create better customer-interactions.

Behind the Engagement Database are enhancements to the Couchbase Data Platform, including a new release of Couchbase Server 5.0 beta and a preview of Couchbase Mobile 2.0. Built on NoSQL technology, the Couchbase Data Platform was designed to help organizations leverage the potential of dynamic data, at any scale, across any channel or device.

According to the company, the new Couchbase releases give developers greater agility, improved query performance, and simplified cluster management to enable enterprises to build better customer engagement applications. A highlight of the latest improvements is the integrated, full text-search capability for server deployments in the cloud, as well as for mobile devices on the edge.

Couchbase Server 5.0 Beta

Key enhancements to Couchbase Server 5.0 beta include richer customer experiences with built-in full text search with independent scaling all in the same Couchbase cluster; and more responsive applications and efficient data management, with in-memory datasets (no disk needed) including support for query, indexing and high availability replication for in-memory data.

There is also simpler application development that leverages N1QL query monitoring and debugging, adaptive indexing, and built-in multi data center programmability. Enhanced security options include fine-grained role-based access control (RBAC) support for users and applications.

Couchbase Mobile 2.0 Preview

Key enhancements for Couchbase Mobile 2.0 Preview include built-in full text search for mobile applications, and simplified application development with support for a N1QL-like API, as well as a new API that provides built-in domain data modeling support.  In addition, agile development of collaborative, multi-user apps is enabled with with automatic conflict management on the edge.
