How Cloud Migration Has Transformed Data Analytics (VIDEO)

Video produced by Steve Nathans-Kelly

At Data Summit 2019, Pythian Group VP Lynda Partner described the impact on organizations, industry-wide, that are moving en masse from data warehouses to the cloud. As veterans in the continually-evolving big data space, her team has been helping clients break down their data silos by bringing together data from disparate sources, and enabling use cases from BI to machine learning.

Partner cited a Unisphere Research report available for download that was sponsored by Pythian, "Profiling the Data Driven Business, 2019."

According to the research, said Partner, 60% of 241 IT and data decision makers are still exclusively on-prem, and only 25% are in the cloud, though almost everybody is exploring getting there.

"I spend a lot of time talking to customers and asking, 'Why are you doing what you're doing?' And the big answer that comes back with these migration projects is always two things. It's always about first of all, saving costs. But equally important is getting to that agility that will allow us to integrate all of this data together and create that dial tone. And so, we work with all data warehouses moving to the cloud, whether it's Oracle or Teradata or Netezza, we are seeing it happen, and it's happening in organizations that are small, and it's happening in organizations that are large."

DBTA’s next Data Summit conference will be held May 19-20, 2020, in Boston, with pre-conference workshops on Monday, May 18.

According to Partner, Pythian's Hadoop practice a few years ago was 95% on-premise, "and now we've moved everybody to the cloud, and I'd say it's 95% in the cloud. It's also not growing. The data warehouse market is moving to cloud-native, platform-as-a-service data warehouses. And SQL is not dead by a long shot. One of the biggest drivers for moving the data warehouse to the cloud is to be able to allow bring your own analytics. Bring your own analytics starts almost initially in every single case with SQL-based analytics."

Often, said Partner, customers come to Pythian, and tell them, "Okay, now that we're in the cloud, hook me up. I want you to hook up whatever my people are comfortable using, because the more analytics they do in the cloud, the better on the data, the better off we are. So hook up Looker, hook up Tableau, hook up Excel—I don't care, I just want people to start using their data."

Many presenters have made their slide decks available on the Data Summit 2019 website at www.dbta.com/DataSummit/2019/Presentations.aspx.
