How to Act on Real-Time Data and Analysis

The ability to quickly act on information to solve problems or create value has long been the goal of many businesses. However, it wasn't until recently when new technologies emerged that the speed and scalability requirements of real-time data and analysis could be addressed both technically and cost-effectively by organizations on a larger scale.

DBTA recently held a webinar featuring Brian Bulkowski, CTO and founder, Aerospike, Mark Van de Wiel, CTO, HVR, and Daniel Mintz, Chief Data Evangelist, Looker who discussed the three capabilities for succeeding with real-time data and analysis.

Considerations for investing in a real-time data feed include performance, security, and trust, Van de Wiel said. HVR offers log based change data capture and optimized delivery when it comes to performance. The company is serious about security, offering encryption and authentication. The platform also offers data validation and transactional processing.

Aerospike offers a real-time framework for streaming transactional analysis, Bulkowski explained. Aerospike Real-Time Analysis Framework 1.0 is compatible with Spark ecosystem, can join Spark streaming data with Aerospike data, and can leverage machine learning for analysis.

Mintz said gaining insights in real-time is easier than ever but there are some tradeoffs. There are three steps that make for good operational analytics:

  • Prioritize
  • Diagnose
  • Act

To prioritize companies need to:

  • Be driven by insight
  • Often requires multiple sources of data
  • Use visualization to highlight priority

To diagnose companies need to:

  • Granularity matters
  • Flexibility is critical
  • Timeliness

Before acting companies must:

  • Remove friction - insight + action in same tool
  • Bulk vs Atomic
  • Automate vs Manual – Where can you remove the human?
