The NoSQL acronym suggests it's the SQL language that is the key difference between traditional relational and newer non-relational data stores, writes Guy Harrison in his Applications Insight column in the January DBTA E-Edition. However, he points out, there is also a significant divergence is in the NoSQL consistency and transaction models as well. It has been suggested, Harrison writes, that it might be better to describe NoSQL databases as "NoACID" databases since they avoid the ACID (Atomic, Consistent, Isolated and Durable) transactions of the relational world.
