Compuware Corporation has launched a Mainframe Cost Savings Program for its customers' sites, in which companies will be entitled to receive a free cost-savings assessment, a roadmap to future mainframe operational costs savings and the opportunity to win a grand prize of $1 million, the vendor says.

IBM today announced it has acquired Guardium, a provider of real-time enterprise database monitoring and protection solutions. Guardium's technology helps clients safeguard data, monitor database activity and reduce operational costs by automating regulatory compliance tasks. Guardium is a privately held company based in Waltham, Mass. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Gomez, Compuware Corporation's web performance monitoring software division, has released a new product, Gomez Active Data Center. Active Data Center connects Gomez's end-user web performance monitoring software tools with "behind-the-firewall" infrastructure monitoring systems to provide an integrated view of application performance and IT service delivery across the enterprise and the internet.

Leaders of the openSUSE Project, an initiative sponsored by Novell, announced that its latest major update—openSUSE 11.2—is available for download. openSUSE is a Linux-based operating system that provides tools and platforms for deploying Linux on desktops and servers. The openSUSE distribution provides the foundation for the SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell.

IBM announced that the First National Bank of Namibia Ltd. is installing two System z10 Business Class mainframes to localize its banking systems and operations, as well as support new growth. The deal marks the first deployment of mainframe technology in Namibia.
