Informatica Corporation, a provider of data integration software, has announced the beta release of Informatica PowerCenter Cloud Edition, a cloud data integration infrastructure that combines the Informatica data integration platform (PowerCenter) with the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), which is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. Complementing this new product is the latest Informatica On Demand offering, PowerCenter Service, which enables IT and business users to remotely execute and manage data integration jobs on Amazon EC2, simply by using an Internet browser.

Initiate Systems, Inc., a provider of data management solutions for information sharing and improved data quality, has launched the Initiate Catalyst software platform for independent software vendors (ISVs) and solution providers. Available as a virtual software appliance, it provides ISVs and solution providers with entity resolution and search capability that can be embedded in their industry-oriented applications and solutions to accelerate data interoperability.

Netezza Corporation, a provider of data warehouse and analytic appliances, has introduced the Netezza TwinFin appliance, the first in a family of new blade server-based appliances. The TwinFin appliance scales to more than a petabyte of user data and delivers significantly better performance over competing solutions. The TwinFin appliance is also priced very reasonably per terabyte, which resets the bar on price-performance in the industry.

Vertica, a column-oriented analytic database technology provider, has announced a new release of its Analytic Database product with new features for performance gains, increases in scale, and advanced analytics. The primary new features consist of a next-generation column-store architecture called FlexStore, MapReduce technology for advanced ETL loading and analytical processing, and load balancing via IPVS.

Think About It
While good database design is always necessary, the value of good design is reinforced by such endeavors as service-oriented architecture. The semantics-laden engineering of service-oriented tactics used in creating solutions melds seamlessly into the semantics-laden world of data modeling. Although one aspect does not necessarily build on top of the other, each works as part of a team in braiding solutions that grow in usefulness as they emerge.
