News Flashes

DataMotion has introduced a new version of its SecureMail Gateway, an intelligent monitoring solution that uses policy-based encryption and Exact Matching functionality to prevent data leakage and protect sensitive information in email messages and file attachments. The automated solution takes email security and compliance out of the hands of employees to minimize human error, ensure strict policy enforcement company-wide, and make it easier for organizations to protect information in transit and adhere to privacy regulations.

The latest IOUG study on database security finds that there are measures that need to be taken to safeguard data from internal abuse; however, preventing privileged users from negligence or malfeasance is a serious challenge. According to this year's study, human error has beat out internal hackers or unauthorized users as the biggest security risk. In addition, more than half of respondents say their organizations still do not have, or are unaware of, data security plans to help address contingencies as they arise. These enterprise data security challenges, and more, are highlighted in a new survey of 350 data managers and professionals by the Independent Oracle Users Group. Underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., it covered progress within three key areas of database security - prevention, detection, and administration.

MicroStrategy Inc., a business intelligence software vendor, has certified its integration with the Amazon Redshift data warehouse service, a cloud-based service designed to deliver high performance analytics for data warehouse and big data applications. "A big part of the value we perceive with Redshift is that it takes advantage of the cloud to really deliver a very impressive price-performance ratio that is compelling for a lot of different use cases," Kevin Spurway, MicroStrategy's vice president of cloud and strategic marketing, tells DBTA. MicroStrategy is one of the first vendors to certify integration with Amazon Redshift.

Progress Software, a provider of software for connecting business applications to data and services, has released DataDirect Connect and DataDirect Connect XE for ODBC 7.1. The releases provide fast, reliable, secure and scalable connectivity for Apache Hive, as well as expanded support for cloud databases including Microsoft SQL Azure. DataDirect Connect and DataDirect Connect XE for ODBC 7.1 also offer new features for IBM DB2 10.1, IBM DB2 pureScale 9.8, Teradata 14, and Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

Yellowfin, a business intelligence vendor, has released Storyboard, a new presentation and collaboration platform for BI that offers a fully integrated and interactive presentation module for BI content. Storyboard's user interface allows BI insights to be intuitively incorporated into businesses' decision-making process and empowers business users to collaborate and benefit from BI.

Think About It

Within the information technology sector, the term architect gets thrown around quite a lot. There are software architects, infrastructure architects, application architects, business intelligence architects, data architects, information architects, and more. It seems as if any area may include someone with an "architect"status. Certainly when laying out plans for a physical building, an architect has a specific meaning and role. But within IT "architect" is used in a much fuzzier manner.
