Underlining the value of a leveraged development model and a growing appreciation of the fact that it is not necessary for all applications and products to be built from the ground up, a new study finds that businesses and organizations implementing multi-source development with open source software benefit from significant cost savings and improved application development efficiencies. The survey of enterprise development organizations was conducted by Black Duck Software, a global provider of products and services for accelerating software development through the managed use of open source software.

IBM has announced new solutions for developers to create and deliver software in both public and private cloud environments. IBM Rational Software Delivery Services for Cloud Computing include ready-to-use application lifecycle management tools for developing and testing in the IBM Cloud, and use infrastructure management capabilities, to help organizations build software applications in the cloud. IBM Smart Business Development and Test on the IBM Cloud is a free public cloud beta for software development that provides compute and storage as a service, as well as Rational Software Delivery Services to help application developers and testers speed the development and delivery of software applications.

Red Hat has announced the general availability of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers, a new product set in the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization portfolio. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers is designed to enable pervasive adoption of virtualization, with a comprehensive solution combining a standalone hypervisor and virtualization management.

Inside Linux at IBM
As vice president of IBM Open Systems Development, Dan Frye is responsible for the technical side of IBM's Linux strategy and execution. This includes the hundreds of full-time programmers within IBM that work directly inside the various Linux communities, enabling IBM's hardware and software for Linux, the relationship with the various Linux communities, technical partnerships with the Linux distributors, and responsibility for IBM's participation in various Linux industry initiatives such as The Linux Foundation.
