CASI Introduces RSS Web Publishing Technology to the Mainframe
CASI Software, a provider of mainframe information transformation and delivery technologies, has announced the release of JES2Mail/JES2FTP version 4.6 and introduced JES2RSS, bringing RSS Web publishing technology to the mainframe.
JES2Mail and JES2FTP transform JES and sequential file report content into PDF, XML, HTML and other formats; enhance the output with advanced PDF overlays (forms), encryption and password-protection; and deliver the results to email in-boxes and network servers. Release 4.6 incorporates all software maintenance since version 4.5 and enables JES2FTP to support the new RSS Web feed publishing option. RSS support can now be added to existing JES2FTP installation as an optionally licensed module.
"JES2RSS is letting the mainframe do Web publishing," Bob LaBayne, vice president for product development at CASI Software, told 5 Minute Briefing, noting that the RSS Web feed publishing option offers advantages in terms of delivery efficiency and also in security. "This is a whole different delivery vehicle," LaBayne said.
JES2RSS, a combination of JES2 FTP with RSS support, allows customers to publish mainframe reports and content as RSS Web feed documents. After JES2FTP has generated a new report and transferred it to an FTP server, it then automatically adds a link to that document into an RSS Web feed file. Users with RSS clients such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, MS Outlook 2007, or any other RSS 2.0 compliant reader can subscribe to these Web feeds and then be automatically informed of new additions to the feed.
The announcement
of JES2RSS was made at the recent SHARE conference and the company
hopes to do a presentation on the product featuring a customer at
the next SHARE conference to be held in Austin, TX, in March 2009,
LaBayne noted. Release 4.6 is available to all current JES2Mail/JES2FTP
maintenance customers and can be downloaded directly from CASI.
For prospective customers, CASI continues to offer free, no obligation
45-day trials and direct support with proof-of-concept applications
during the trial period. For more information, go here or send an email to info@casisoft.com.

ioSAFE Selects Fujitsu Disaster Protected Internal Hard Drives
Fujitsu Computer Products of America, a supplier of computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, announced that ioSafe, a provider of disaster-proof hardware and disaster recovery services, is using the Fujitsu 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives (HDD) in its ioSafe 3.5 series. "We are teaming with Fujitsu to deliver the world's first three-and-a-half-inch internal hard drive with disaster protection," Robb Moore, CEO of ioSafe, told 5 Minute Briefing.
"From an enterprise storage point of view, the sweet spot for ioSafe technology is wherever data is vulnerable," said Moore. "Many enterprises that have data centers have quite a lot of storage that doesn't exist at the data center," he noted, adding that, according to some reports, up to 70 percent of data actually sits outside the data center in remote offices, on executive laptops or stand-alone servers that are outside of the data center itself. The ioSafe 3.5 series offers any organization or individual that needs to protect sensitive data against fire or water damage a simple, affordable solution, said Moore.
The full Fujitsu HDD line-up, up to 320GB capacity, is available in the ioSafe 3.5 series, offering the industry a high performance and expanded capacity drive with a disaster-protected guarantee. The ioSafe 3.5 series certifies fire protection to 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes (per the ASTM E119 standard) and water protection from fresh or salt water damage for full immersion at depths up to five feet for 24 hours. ioSafe adds a ruggedized casing to the Fujitsu 2.5-inch drive, which can then be deployed and used like any other industry-standard 3.5-inch disk drive, but with the added capability of disaster protection. Illustro Systems GAs TCP/IP Monitoring product for VSE Systems
Illustro Systems International has completed the beta program for z/IPMon a full-function TCP/IP performance and problem management solution for customers using IBM's VSE operating system. The product is now generally available after seven months of beta testing, the vendor also said.
z/IPMon, according to the vendor, is the only product to provide comprehensive network performance, problem and alert management in the VSE marketplace. "In a VSE customer environment in particular, TCP/IP is certainly a very important resource and they don't have any tools - there are no tools available in the VSE environment - to help them manage it, to find out what is going on, or even to look back to see what has happened in the past," Eric Vaughan, president and CEO of Illustro, told 5 Minute Briefing. "There is no other software product or any other tool available - so z/IPMon was created to fill that void and to help these customers manage what has become an absolutely critical resource today," he said.
z/IPMon was developed from the ground-up with a 100 percent Web-based AJAX interface, and offers a rich, Windows application user experience. According to Illustro, even non-mainframers such as a generic network support team will be able to use the interface, and all functions are available from any standard Web browser.
"TCP/IP is a complicated product number one, and, number two, it is a very important product because for most customers it is the way all of their users get access to the system, so keeping it up is just as important as anything else they have in their system," Vaughan noted. "The combination of it being complicated and essential to their survival meant that they needed something to really understand what was going on. Without this, they were literally flying blind." More information on z/IPMon is available at here.

FalconStor Launches “EZStart” Program For Channel Partners
FalconStor Software, provider of TOTALLY Open data protection solutions, has launched the FalconStor EZStart Program, which enables authorized solution provider partners to build, market and support FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS), FalconStor Continuous Data Protector (CDP), and FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL) with deduplication solutions as turnkey appliances based on leading platforms.
"Our EZStart program is actually a channel enablement program that allows our partners to deliver quick solutions - easy to sell, and easy to deploy at the customer site, and easy to manage by the customer," Fadi Albatal, FalconStor director of marketing, told 5 Minute Briefing. The program aims to simplify multiple things, he explained. It is about "simplifying the purchase experience for the customer, simplifying the partner engagement with the customer, and empowering the partner with a full portfolio of data protection solutions that they can offer to their customer base."
Once a channel partner's technical staff plugs in a provided pre-loaded USB drive, the EZStart installation wizard automatically starts, installing the necessary operating system, proper drivers and RAID configuration on server and storage hardware familiar to the channel partner. The EZStart wizard then walks the installer through basic manual steps to configure the FalconStor software and completes the appliance build.
The turnkey appliance solutions can be configured by channel partners on the server platform of their choice, free from hardware vendor lock-in. According to Albatal, this "will complement or complete the portfolio of offerings for our partners and this way, ultimately, the end-user will have the software of their choice and the hardware of their choice through their partners of preference."
