Healthpac Selects InterSystems CACHÉ for  Medical Billing Software System

InterSystems Corp. has announced that Healthpac Computer Systems, a provider of medical billing software, has become an InterSystems application partner. Healthpac will be using the MultiValue capabilities of InterSystems CACHÉ high-performance object database as the technology foundation for its H2003 medical billing software application.

“InterSystems set out some time ago to bring excitement to the development of applications in the MultiValue space and I think the relationship with Healthpac is one example of the success we are having there,” Robert Nagle, vice president of software development, InterSystems, told 5 Minute Briefing. “I also think it reaffirms the commitment to partnership that InterSystems has shown over the years that we have been in business.”

InterSystems is a leading provider of innovative database and integration software. Its product line includes the InterSystems CACHÉ high performance object database, InterSystems Ensemble rapid integration platform, and InterSystems HealthShare platform for regional and national electronic health records. Healthpac develops and markets comprehensive, easily customizable medical billing software for a customer base that includes more than 1,700 users in 43 states.

CACHÉ has innovative Web technology that offers easy access to advanced software tools in a database platform that will enable Healthpac to execute its development strategy of offering Web-based applications in the future. “We have established a very good working relationship with Healthpac and I think one of the key things that they were looking for was a partner that would stick by them for the long term, and they have become convinced that InterSystems is such a partner,” said Nagle. InterSystems' way of working with partners is very much “a hands-on, engaged, proactive” approach - “on the sales side, on the support side, and if necessary, on the development side,” he added.

IBM Announces IBM U2 Web DE 4.4; Sets Dates for U2 University

IBM has announced that the U2 Web Development Environment for UniData and UniVerse version 4.4 (previously named IBM RedBack) is generally available. The new release increases performance, reduces costs, delivers a more usable design environment and enhances SB+ conversions. “This is a release that adds significant function,” Thom Garcia, U2 Tools product manager, IBM, told 5 Minute Briefing. “When we were looking at building U2 Web Development Environment release 4.3, we had a fairly large scope,” he explained. “We decided to break it up into two releases. This is really the second half of what we had intended to deliver originally in 4.3.”

IBM U2 Web DE 4.4 offers an enhanced garbage collection process, said Garcia. This improvement “really is fairly important because it does a couple of things. One, is it makes it easier to administer,” he said. Additionally, a dedicated Webshare for doing garbage collection itself is no longer required. “That enables the customer to either reduce their number of Webshares and reduce their overall cost, or use that Webshare for additional performance,” Garcia explained. IBM U2 Web DE 4.4 also provides an integrated Eclipse-based design and test environment to quickly develop robust U2 Web applications. The IBM U2 Web Designer, introduced at release 4.3, has been enhanced to include RedBack Object (RBO) design as well as RBOScope for testing and debugging. IBM U2 Web Designer continues to provide a rich GUI environment for designing new or converting SB+ assets to ASP.NET-based Web solutions. Additionally, RedBack Designer has been replaced and rewritten as an integrated Eclipse-based component of IBM U2 Web Designer. Testing and debugging of RBOs is also included in this integrated tool via a rewritten RBOScope plug-in. The result, according to the vendor, is an easy-to-use integrated tool that lets developers design and test interfaces and Web applications in a single environment.

With release 4.3, IBM U2 Web DE converted SB+ screens and processes to ASP.NET pages, leveraging existing business logic while quickly creating functional Web applications. IBM U2 Web DE 4.4 offers improved integration with SB+ Security/Login, improved AJAX capabilities, support for auto converting SB combo boxes and improved support of SB conversions. Separately, IBM also announced that dates and venues for U2 University have been locked in. U2 University (U2U) is the premier U2 technical conference for IT executives, managers, professionals, DBAs, developers and business partners. The first U2 University will be held August 28-30 in Denver, CO. Subsequent conferences will be held September 11-13 in Sydney, Australia; as well as October 2-4 in London, England; November 13-15 in Tarrytown, NY; and November 27-29 in San Francisco, CA. There will be three focused tracks: U2 Data Servers, Application Development and Emerging Technologies. In addition to 45 technical sessions with a focus on information to advance attendees’ expertise, the events will offer multiple opportunities for meeting face-to-face with leading U2 experts, complimentary certification exams, birds of a feather sessions, networking lunches and in-depth product roadmaps.

Ladybridge Systems Unveils OpenQM on a PDA

U.K.-based Ladybridge Systems has announced the availability of the OpenQM post-relational MultiValue database product on PDAs running Windows Mobile 5 or the older Windows CE. "By bringing the world of MultiValue databases to PDAs, OpenQM establishes a new market for personal computing applications, whether they be totally stand-alone or the mobile component of a corporate system,” said Martin Phillips, technical director of Ladybridge Systems, at the time of the announcement. “We see it as being of great value to organizations with staff who work away from the office and may not have an immediate network connection to access corporate data." There has been interest from potential users in the retail and service industries who have a need for portable computing power that can be synchronized with company servers when a network connection is available, according to the vendor.

OpenQM uses the data model common to all MultiValue database products and offers a multi-user solution on Windows and Linux as well as personal computing on the PDA. A Mac version was recently announced. The PDA version has recently completed a successful beta test period and is now available for general use.

Although the user interface is essentially character mode at this release, program operations allow control of the keypad display and detection of stylus taps. Combined with screen save and restore functions, it is easy to construct interfaces that appear to contain Windows drop-down menus and other similar elements, according to Ladybridge.

Applications are developed in QMBasic, closely compatible with other MultiValue products but including advanced features such as object oriented programming. The PDA version of OpenQM includes most of the application development tools provided on other platforms though it is likely that application development would be performed on a desktop system. By providing the tools, developers can make final adjustments to their programs on the device on which they will be run. Files on an OpenQM server can be accessed directly from the PDA when a suitable network connection exists.

The product is licensed on the same terms as the server version with a free upgrade period of up to 10 years and the ability to transfer the license to a new PDA during this period. For further information, go here or email sales@ladybridge.com.

Exclusive Research - Financial and Accounting Most Popular MultiValue Applications

Financial and accounting applications are the most popular running on the MultiValue database platform, according to a proprietary study The State of the MultiValue Marketplace 2007, conducted by Unisphere Researchand sponsored by Revelation Software, InterSystems and DesignBais. Sixty-seven percent of the respondents indicated that they had developed financial or accounting applications using MultiValue technology. The next popular choice was “other,” (48.4 percent), followed by supply chain (46.6 percent), ERP (32.9 percent) and business intelligence (32.9 percent).

Unisphere Research, the research unit of 5 Minute Briefing, conducted the survey of the MultiValue community, which included end-users as well as value-added resellers (VAR) systems integrators (SI) and independent software vendors (ISV). In total, 252 people participated. About 40 percent of the respondents identified themselves as end-users of MultiValue technology. The remaining 60 percent were VARs, SIs and ISVs.

The MultiValue remains committed to the technology. Nearly three quarters of the respondents (74.5 percent) said that MultiValue databases provide more value than relational database management systems. Only 5.2 percent felt MultiValue provided less value than relations. The State of the MultiValue Marketplace 2007 is the most comprehensive study of today’s MultiValue community. jBASE and BlueFinity Hold Successful Conferences

jBASE and BlueFinity, both members of the Mpower 1 International group of companies, wrapped up successful conferences recently at the Miami Beach Resort & Spa in Florida and are already planning the next ones. The jBASE User Conference 2007, opened with a keynote by Pete Loveless, CEO of jBASE International, who reviewed the current state of jBASE International as a company, the benefits of its relationship with Mpower1 and TEMENOS, as well as changes and updates to the company and community since the last conference, and its future plans. The conference was attended by developers, users and partners from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, England, Denmark, Hungary, India and France. A highlight of the jBASE conference was the "jBASE Product Roadmap" session, which focused on current enhancements as well as changes in the upcoming jBASE Release 5, a 64-bit implementation including features such as warm start recovery, resilient files, auto-resizing files, online backup, OBjEX.Net and more. jBASE 4.1.5 and Release 5  will be supported until at least 2012, the company stated.  In addition to getting a sneak preview of jBASE Release 5, attendees also offered suggestions on features for future releases.

The conference was a remarkable success with participants from nine different countries in attendance.  Plans are already underway for the next show which will be held in two years' time on the USA West Coast,“ Keri Glennon, marketing officer at jBASE International, told 5 Minute Briefing, via email. “This time around, we plan to offer more hands-on workshops and demonstration labs so users can have a more interactive experience.  The pattern will be similar to this year and the jBASE conference will be followed by a separate BlueFinity Developers Conference in the same location so that our users will have access to all of the new information that BlueFinity has to offer. “

The BlueFinity Developers Conference 2007 also welcomed attendees from around the world to its inaugural event, which directly followed the jBASE conference at the same venue. According to the company, the conference was designed to meet the needs of those new to mv.NET, the Microsoft .NET development and deployment product for all the major MultiValue databases, and Reporting Services Data Connector (RSDC) for Microsoft Reporting Services solutions as well as attendees looking for an in-depth technical look at the advanced functionality. David Cooper, lead developer at BlueFinity, began with a high level technical introduction to the benefits and rich feature-set of each of the BlueFinity products. And, in the Product Roadmap session, Cooper explained what will be coming soon, including NET fw 3.0, AJAX, Vista and 64-bit support.

As this was our first ever conference, we tried to strike a balance between offering content that was going to be of interest to the 'new to BlueFinity' person and content that was going to be interesting for an existing user of BlueFinity products.  Given that the conference was only a day long, this was a challenge. However, according to the feedback, I think we managed to provide something of interest to all of the many attendees,” said Cooper.

Of all the sessions, it was the one on Web development using our new 'Binding Objects for the Web' that caused the most noise in the room.  People just couldn't believe how little code was being used to do so much in a browser - all using industry standard tools and technology,” Cooper observed.

Updates on the jBASE User Conference 2009 as well as information on an upcoming regional user conference in France will be posted on the jBASE site. Plans are also underway for the next BlueFinity events, including a regional show in France this fall followed by another BlueFinity Developers Conference on the West Coast in two years.
