Big data offers both vast opportunities as well as vexing challenges for every organization it touches. To be of value, information needs to be readily available, as close to real time as possible, to users in any location. Though the onset of big data has made that task more daunting, the enormous competitive advantages that come with effectively managing big data can far outweigh performance issues. The problem is many existing databases and data environments are not prepared, as performance may degrade when massive amounts of data in various formats are brought into current environments. Along with the technical issues associated with managing data growth, many organizations are simply not ready from a management point of view.
