New IDC White Paper Examines Current State of KVM

KVM is a key open source technology providing virtualization capabilities to Linux and is expanding in use, states a new IDC white paper authored by Gary Chen.  The paper, sponsored by the Open Virtualization Alliance, examines the current state of KVM, identifies keys to future KVM success, and presents information about the progress the community has made.

While x86 is the most popular Linux and KVM architecture today, work is being done to port to other architectures, according to the report, which cites IBM’s efforts to port Linux and KVM to the Power, KVM’s work upstream on KVM for System z, and SUSE’s tech preview of KVM for Linux on System z. ARM, popular in mobile client devices, is also targeting servers, the report states.

“The KVM community continues to grow its share rapidly in the virtualization market and innovative projects like OpenStack continue to open more doors for KVM,” the report adds.
