New Linux Kernel Offers Enhanced Performance for Databases

Linux kernel 2.6.38 provides a range of enhancements that improve performance for running databases as well as other programs, writes Joab Jackson in a recent InfoWorld.com article, "New Linux kernel gets a speed boost." New technologies in the Linux operating system kernel that are expected to bump up performance include automatic process grouping, in which the process scheduler groups all processes with the same session ID as a single entity, and transparent huge pages, which increases the cache size for storing often-consulted memory addresses, while improvements have also been made to the VFS (virtual file system) to make it more scalable, Jackson explains. Read his article detailing the key points of the release at InfoWorld.com.
