New Survey Finds 62% of OpenStack Deployments Are on KVM

The OpenStack User Committee and Foundation staff conducted a survey of OpenStack cloud operators and end users and shared the results with the community during the recent OpenStack Summit Hong Kong. The survey generated 822 responses and catalogued 387 OpenStack cloud deployments across 56 countries.

According to the survey, KVM was the operating system of choice for OpenStack deployments by a wide margin: 62% of OpenStack deployments are on KVM.

In other research highlights, the survey showed that the top three business drivers for OpenStack use were cost savings, operational efficiency, and the fact that it is an open platform. The top five countries with deployments were the U.S., India, China, France, and Canada. The leading deployments were on-premises private clouds at 60%, hosted private cloud deployments at 17%, and public clouds at 15%.
