Who is Doing Linux Kernel Development?

The latest update of The Linux Foundation’s report on Linux kernel development has been published. Since 2005,  almost 10,000 individual developers  representing 1,000 different companies have contributed to the kernel, creating a common resource developed by companies that compete fiercely in other areas. Written by Jonathan Corbet, LWN.net, Greg Kroah-Hartman, The Linux Foundation, and Amanda McPherson, The Linux Foundation, this is the fifth update to the document, which has been published roughly annually since 2008.

The new report covers development through the 3.10 release, with an emphasis on the releases (3.3 to 3.10) made since the last update. The rate of change in the kernel is high and increasing, with over 10,000 patches going into each recent kernel release. These releases each contain the work of over 1,100 developers representing over 225 corporations.
