Rocket Software has announced the general availability of the Rocket U2 Toolkit for .NET v1.2 (U2NETDK), which delivers Microsoft .NET interfaces for the UniVerse and UniData data servers. The new release allows .NET programmers to leverage the Microsoft .NET Framework and CLR (Common Language Runtime) with the U2 databases.
Three U2 Tools
U2 Toolkit for .NET includes three complementary tools in one kit: UniObjects for .NET, U2NETDK ADO.NET Provider, and U2 Database Add-Ins for Visual Studio; UniObjects for .NET (UO.NET), an interface used to build consoles, Windows, or ASP.NET web applications, as well as web services or smart client applications, using any of the .NET CLR languages; and U2NETDK ADO.NET Provider, which enables users' .NET applications to connect to the U2 databases, execute the commands of the application, and deliver result sets and datasets to the applications.
The U2 Database Add-Ins for Visual Studio are a collection of features that integrate seamlessly into users' Visual Studio development environments so that they can work with U2 objects such as tables, views, and subroutines. It also provides support for Microsoft’s Entity Data Model (EDM).
Integration to SSIS and SSRS
“There are some pretty significant features that we are adding to help improve developer productivity,” Jackie Burhans, director, U2 Partner Enablement at Rocket Software, tells DBTA. “The original version was basically a .NET provider that let you access U2, some APIs and a refresh of our UniObjects for .NET. With this new version, we now have some Visual Studio add-ins that make it a lot faster to do development as well as a lot of integration to SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and SQL Server Report Services (SSRS) to make it easy to integrate with Microsoft SQL Server tooling.”
The result, notes Susie Siegesmund, vice president and general manager for Rocket U2, is that U2 Toolkit for .NET v1.2 provides advantages such as drag and drop capabilities for users that want to use Visual Studio to develop their own applications that access their U2 data.
Interface to U2 Through .NET
“There is a certain percentage of our customer base that is very much into .NET and so they want a way to interface to U2 through .NET and then as soon as you give them that, they want a way to make it easier and faster and more plug-ins,” says Burhans. “That is what we are continuing to develop.”
