Continuent Announces New Tungsten Version

Continuent, Inc., a provider of solutions for backup, continuous data availability, advanced database replication and database performance scalability, has announced Continuent Tungsten version 1.1. Continuent Tungsten offers SMB customers an easy to manage, dynamic database replication solution with automatic cluster management, high availability and scalability for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle databases.

The Tungsten software is licensable as three different editions known as Easy HA, Easy Scale, and Enterprise, Robert Hodges, chief technology officer for Continuent, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "Easy HA is for standard disaster recovery needs with two node failover (a production database node is replicated as the failover system if the primary system goes down). Easy Scale is for load balancing and involves two or more replicated slave databases that can be used to distribute workloads across. Enterprise is the most complete offering in the Tungsten line and can be used for all supported use cases including disaster recovery, no data loss migrations, performance load balancing, real-time data integration, and real-time data warehousing."

Tungsten Enterprise is available now for MySQL and MariaDB databases, will be available for PostgreSQL in September, and for Oracle in Q4. Continuent Tungsten runs on all Linux and Solaris platforms, and there is also a Continuent Tungsten Cloud Edition that runs in the Amazon EC2 cloud through integration with RightScale.

Continuent Tungsten Enterprise 1.1 introduces key new core features including a one-step installation and configuration process, a fully automated database failover using sophisticated production rules, integrated, easy to use backup procedures, a unique session-consistency load balancing model, comprehensive database cluster management for database administration, and the ability to control operating system services from the cluster management console program.

Regarding the cluster management capabilities, Hodges also tells 5 Minute Briefing that "a group of replicated databases can be managed as a cluster, and there is a new auto-discovery capability that makes it easy to add a new slave to the cluster. The new management capabilities also enable administrators to manage the entire cluster from any given node, not just the master system."
