Database Virtualization is the Key to Agile DevOps

Are your developers wasting up to 40% of their time waiting for test data? This hidden bottleneck slows releases, kills innovation, and jacks up costs.

DBTA recently held a webinar, Data Delays to Dev Velocity: Reclaim 40% of Developer Time Overnight, with Cwyn Weldy, senior sales engineer at Perforce Delphix, who discussed database virtualization for Agile DevOps.

Weldy explained how to break free from traditional, time-wasting data delivery methods and empower teams with fast, self-service access to production-quality data.

Application development accounts for less than 20% of a developer’s time, Weldy said. There are several time sinks that are responsible for this, including meetings and communications; debugging and troubleshooting; environment setup and data provisioning; CI/CD and build processes; and context switching and distractions.

Virtualization can help remove these bottlenecks in several ways:

Meetings and Communication: Reduce ad-hoc escalations and status-check meetings by 5-10%.

Debugging and Troubleshooting: Enable faster bug reproduction and resolution. Cuts bug isolation time by up to 53%.

Environment Setup and Data Provisioning: Empower self-service to create and refresh in minutes. Accelerate cycles by 75% and app development by 58%.

CI/CD and Build Processes: API-driven instant environments for seamless pipeline integration. Cuts build wait time by 65%.

Context Switching and Distractions: Gain autonomy via self-service access. Cuts interruptions and boosts focus by more than 40%.

By instituting virtualization, an optimized developer would then spend more time accelerating application development, increase the number of new applications released, create new development environments, and more, Weldy said.
