Denodo Technologies, a provider of data virtualization software, has unveiled the Denodo Platform 5.0. This latest version of Denodo´s solution enables data virtualization for both agile business intelligence and agile development of connected application and helps organizations access all of their information sources including big data, cloud and unstructured sources. The new release was previewed at the TDWI conference in Las Vegas.
Denodo takes a broad view of what data virtualization does for an enterprise, Suresh Chandrasekaran, senior vice president, North America, Denodo Technologies, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The broad theme of this release is basically data virtualization for the enterprise, but at the same time another very important theme is the idea of linked data services, Chandrasekaran says. Data virtualization and linked data services, Denodo contends, are the only way to enable the agile development of connected applications across the enterprise, the web, in the cloud, and mobile platforms.
“As opposed to most of the other vendors who have focused on the idea of agile business intelligence, a data warehouse extension, or an alternative way to extend what they have done in the traditional BI space, Denodo has applied its technology to that area - which is very important - but also to applying enterprise data services for agile application development in the mobile or cloud space," Chandrasekaran says. In this release, Denodo also makes significant enhancements to expose big data to the enterprise in an abstracted way so it doesn’t become "a big data island," he adds.
Denodo Platform 5.0 features new RESTful Linked Data Services that enable agile development of connected applications for mobile and web users. “This is very important because, apart from business intelligence, more than 60% of application development today is focusing on mobile applications and cloud applications.” It is necessary to discover these data assets in the enterprise but also to provide the user with an experience that does not present all the data at the same time - which would not fit on the screen and, based on network bandwidth on mobile devices would be difficult, notes Chandrasekaran. “The JSON, RESTful, XML aspects of it help data from the enterprise standpoint to be more easily consumed by the application developers, and for the end user it is better because they can consume the data in small chunks and change their interaction paradigm. Users can start with a search, switch to browsing, and switch to query, and then they can even do an update because these are fully read and write data services.”
The new release also offers improved big data connectivity. “Data virtualization is providing many ways to abstract and expose big data to the enterprise,” says Chandrasekaran, emphasizing that in the 5.0 release, Denodo has increased its connectivity to big data stores. “We always had connectivity to Hadoop, but now we have expanded on that with a lot more NoSQL, Cassandra, CouchDB, MongoDB, Neo4j, graph databases, as well as multiple ways to connect to Hadoop.” The result for customers, he explains, is that organizations that have invested in big data solutions now can expose it to many more people and allow them to take advantage of it. “We can expose these instances to the enterprise as linked data services or as virtual data objects and that will increase the return on the asset that they have already invested in.”
Additional feature functionality in the new release, says Denodo, include unified data governance to bring top-down and bottom-up virtual models together and integrate with top data quality and data management tools for more granular and customizable security; as well as a boost in features and real-time and hybrid performance for agile BI and logical data warehouses.
