The Heartbleed vulnerability revelation has spurred industry action to strengthen open source offerings. IBM, along with Amazon Web Services, Cisco, Dell, Facebook, Fujitsu, Google, Intel, Microsoft, NetApp, RackSpace, and VMware, announced a new alliance, called the Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII), intended to provide more support to under-funded mission-critical open source projects.
The alliance's first priority is to better fund OpenSSL, which has been making do on donations of about $2,000 a year. OpenSSL, of course, is the popular security software with the Heartbleed exposure.
