MarkLogic and Hortonworks Partner to Enhance Real-Time Big Data Applications with Apache Hadoop

MarkLogic Corporation has joined the technology partner program of Hortonworks, a leading vendor promoting the development and support of Apache Hadoop. According to the vendors, by leveraging MarkLogic and Hortonworks, organizations will be able to seamlessly combine the power of MapReduce with MarkLogic's real-time, interactive analysis and indexing on a single, unified platform.

MarkLogic will certify its Connector for Hadoop against the Hortonworks Data Platform, a platform which makes Apache Hadoop more robust and easier to install, manage, and use, and provides an open and stable foundation for enterprises to build and deploy big data solutions. The two companies will also develop reference architectures for MarkLogic-Hadoop solutions and further align their product roadmaps. With MarkLogic and Hortonworks, organizations will have a fully supported big data application platform that enables real-time data access and full-text search together with batch processing and massive archival storage.

There are two main reasons that MarkLogic has chosen to partner with Hortonworks, says Justin Makeig, senior product manager at MarkLogic. "One is that they have got incredible experience building out one of the biggest and most mission-critical Hadoop installations and they have got the core leaders for the main Hadoop project. The leader of the MapReduce open source project and the leader of the HDFS open source project - are all employed by Hortonworks." In addition, he notes, "The core product is 100% open source and we think that that is an important aspect of Hadoop and we want to get behind that leader in the open source community."

Through the partnership, organizations can better leverage their Apache Hadoop stack to build interactive, operational applications on all of their data without having to sacrifice ease of use, development agility, or enterprise reliability. While Makeig would not rule out future partnerships with other key players in the Hadoop world such as MapR and Cloudera, "right now we are really investing in the partnership with Hortonworks," he emphasizes. "The first step in that is going to be certification with their data platform. That means our connector is going to be certified by our engineering to work with their data platform. We are going to provide support so it is a one-stop shop so if you want to use Hadoop and MarkLogic, you can download our connector and the Hortonworks data platform and they will be guaranteed to work together."  The next step will be to collaborate with Hortonworks on reference architectures, Makeig says, noting, "We have seen interest in a wide variety of our customer base."  In particular, he adds, many of MarkLogic's public sector customers have interest in Hadoop. "There are also some mandates to look at open source first and so this provides us with a great story."
