Modernizing Storage to Drive Optimized MySQL Operations

The continuing economic uncertainty brought by the pandemic has supercharged many organizations to “do more with less,” tasking development teams (among others) with reducing resource and cost drains while delivering best-of-breed applications designed for scale and performance. These developers—specifically those working with large-scale MySQL databases—bear a weighty responsibility, unaware of the best practices, technologies, and methodologies that can propel them toward success.

MySQL experts joined DBTA’s webinar, “Best Practices for Accelerating your MySQL Data,” to examine architectural tips and best practices that can best support large-scale MySQL operations while enabling the delivery of highly-performant applications—paying particular attention to replication and data protection at scale, simpler storage management, higher density, and higher availability in virtualized environments.

Nihal Mirashi, principal solutions marketing manager of database solutions at Pure Storage, and Andrew Sillifant, principal solutions manager at Pure Storage, began the conversation  emphasizing that our world is outcome-based and driven by data. This growing, data- and product-obsessed atmosphere creates a multitude of issues as it does opportunities; namely, data infrastructure can represent a massive bottleneck for enterprises failing to adapt to modern industry demands.

Enter MySQL, the most popular open source, relational database management system (RDBMS) first released in 1995 to manage and become the backbone for organizational data. While there is a plethora of reasons enterprises continue to look toward MySQL as their RDBMS of choice, it's not without its faults.

Challenges that most organizations face when employing MySQL boil down to a few areas, including data gravity and mobility, performance, data protection, and platform modernization with consistent experiences both on-prem and in the cloud, according to the speakers. Though being able to identify these obstacles is a critical component in radically optimizing MySQL operations, how can an enterprise effectively battle these intrinsic MySQL elements?

The speakers positioned Pure Storage as the ultimate tool in unlocking the value of MySQL; by boosting storage capabilities for MySQL, Pure Storage uncomplicates data storage and enables organizations to modernize applications, operations, and infrastructure for optimized performance in existing infrastructures.

Pure Storage is divided into three solutions that tackle different aspects of storage enhancement:

  • FlashArray, a low-latency block and file storage that consolidates databases into a single platform and provides storage data services that increase the efficiency of database operations.
  • FlashBlade, a high throughput file and object storage for rapid backup and recovery for MySQL databases.
  • Postworx, an end-to-end, multi-cloud storage and data management solution for Kubernetes which enables container granular storage, disaster recovery, and data security.

Focusing on FlashArray, the speakers explained that by leveraging the power of volume snapshots, FlashArray can provide continuous replication paired with always-on deduplication to reduce physical storage footprint, high availability with MySQL clustering, and eliminates long seeding times.
