MySQL Workbench 6.0 Provides Redesigned GUI to Simplify Database Management

To help developers and administrators better manage their dynamic data environments, Oracle has released MySQL Workbench 6.0.  MySQL Workbench is a unified visual tool that provides data modeling, SQL development, and comprehensive administration for server configuration, user administration, and migration. The new release is a major update that addresses over 200 inputs and requests from the community and is intended to make it easier for administrators and developers to design, develop, and manage their MySQL databases.

The overall significance of the MySQL Workbench 6.0 release due to the improvements it provides in terms of the usability and workflow of design, development, and administration of MySQL databases, Monica Kumar, senior director of product marketing, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Among the notable enhancements in the new release is a redesigned GUI featuring a modernized home screen and a streamlined interface for unified, multi-tasking database management and development.  Other key new capabilities in MySQL Workbench 6.0 are the Schema Inspector, which provides a suite of detailed views of all objects in the schemas plus access to table maintenance operations such as ANALYZE and OPTIMIZE TABLE. 

A MySQL Audit Log Inspector provides the ability to browse and analyze audit data generated via MySQL Enterprise Audit. With powerful filtering and search capabilities users will be able to more easily assess the audit log content generated via MySQL Enterprise Audit. In addition, the MySQL Enterprise Backup GUI now allows setup, run, schedule, and view backups while in progress, as well as automating restores.

MySQL Workbench 6.0 provides wizard-based migration support for Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), PostgreSQL and now, additional support for Sybase SQL Anywhere and SQLite. 

MySQL Workbench Community Edition is available free of charge under the GPL. MySQL Workbench Enterprise Edition is included with the MySQL Enterprise Edition subscription.

MySQL Workbench 6.0 Enterprise Edition provides customers with additional enterprise features, including MySQL Enterprise Backup GUI which now allows setup, run, schedule, and view backups while in progress, as well as automating restores; and MySQL Audit Log Inspector which allows users to browse and analyze audit data generated via MySQL Enterprise Audit.
