OpenWorld Tokyo 2012: Oracle Presents Business Analytics Strategy

Oracle addressed the need to make IT infrastructure and business analytics technologies simpler and more efficient in a presentation to OpenWorld Tokyo 2012 attendees that was also made available via live webcast.  In addition to presenting its strategy and plans for business analytics, the company also unveiled new additions to its product portfolio.

With 8x growth in worldwide data since 2005, and 65% of global enterprise data housed in Oracle databases, business analytics has become and will continue to be a top priority for c-level executives. With Oracle Business Analytics, the company plans to tackle big data challenges by providing a complete, integrated family of solutions, including more than 80 business intelligence and performance management applications, business intelligence foundational technology, advanced analytics and Oracle Engineered Systems.

In his keynote address, Oracle president Mark Hurd explained how the business users of tomorrow will require faster and more comprehensive information access. "The true question with analytics is how to get the right information to the right person at the right time to make the right decision," he said, adding that, "It's simply too hard and too inefficient to continue on with the IT infrastructures of today." Hurd went on to outline four strategies that seek to position Oracle as the premier IT company. First, "From hardware, operating systems, databases, applications, we're going to be best-of-breed," he said, adding that the company is spending roughly $5 billion in research and development in the coming year. Second, Oracle aims to vertically integrate to deliver extreme performance and total cost of ownership. Third, Hurd stated that Oracle is, "building out our industry solutions." The company's fourth and final strategy is to bring a, "new generation of applications via the cloud" built on common middleware.

One of the new products in the Oracle Business Analytics line is Endeca Information Discovery, whose general availability was announced at the conference. This solution is designed for the "exploration and analysis of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from diverse sources, including data warehouses, transaction systems, blogs, social media, sensor data and big data." By providing automatic data modeling, this product aims to reduce the burden on organizations' IT departments and allow for untrained business users to leverage analytics to a greater degree. Endeca Information Discovery and its larger Oracle Business Analytics suite of products will allow businesses to make faster, more effective decisions that will boost efficiency and reduce costs.

In addition to Endeca Information Discovery, at Oracle OpenWorld Tokyo 2012, Oracle also announced two new Oracle Business Intelligence applications - Oracle Manufacturing Analytics and Oracle Enterprise Asset Management Analytics; new BI applications for SAP Sales& Distribution and Materials Management; and Enterprise Performance Management System Release 11.1.2.2.
