Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition 4.0 Now Available

Oracle has announced the new release of Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition 4.0 including significant new features for high availability, scalability, and performance.

Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition is an open source, transactional storage engine for key-value pairs written entirely in Java that can be deployed as an embedded or "edge" database, enabling developers to build applications that require no manual administration. Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition 4.0 includes new replication features for high availability and scalability and significant performance improvements for highly concurrent applications. Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition 4.0 with high availability is available under the Berkeley DB dual license.

Rex Wang, vice president of product marketing at Oracle, tells 5 Minute Briefing that "the fact that this version of Oracle Berkeley DB is fully written in Java provides the benefits of high portability and the ability to run on multiple platforms. The Java Edition will be of great interest to ISVs who are building applications that require local data persistence and no SQL overhead. The key new feature in version 4.0 is the delivery of high availability functionality via data replication technology."

High availability provided by replication supports automatic system fail over and load balancing of read operations, allowing developers to eliminate single points of failure and decrease downtime. The new capabilities also deliver improved write performance and scalability across multiple systems. It provides a single master, multiple replica replication implementation including features such as dynamic group membership, configurable transaction durability and consistency guarantees, automatic fail-over and both synchronous and asynchronous replication.

Other new features include performance improvements to the existing concurrent execution and group commit functionality, monitoring features that make it easier to deploy and monitor the Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition data store in production applications, and support for the industry standard JConsole, which can be used to view and graph database statistics.
