Sepaton Ramps Up Storage Capacity with Hitachi Storage Arrays

Sepaton, Inc. is shipping a next-generation data protection platform that features Hitachi Data Systems HUS 100 storage arrays for 25% more capacity, delivering what Sepaton says is 350% more single system capacity than other system on the market.

Sepaton's S2100-ES3 series 2922 purpose-built appliance, with version 6.3 software, “is an extremely large system that is designed for the largest enterprises,” Peter Quirk, director of product management, at Sepaton, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

In addition, with the advanced capabilities provided in the new appliance, there is the advantage of being able to protect up to 2 petabytes of data, notes Florin Dejeu, director of production management for Sepaton. Also, the appliance provides the ability to manage all of that storage through one system, he adds. “We are not doing a sprawl into the environment by having unique systems, different systems, within the environment.”

Sepaton’s S2100-ES3 platform is designed specifically for large backup and restore operations, the vendor says. The appliance incorporates Sepaton’s DBeXstream technology, designed to capacity while speeding backup times for large enterprise databases such as Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server. Version 6.3 software also supports OST optimized duplication enabling faster and more efficient duplication by reducing the workload on the NetBackup media servers and on the network.

“In the prior release of our software, 6.1, we introduced new database deduplication technology that was optimized for extremely large databases that need to be backed up in multiple streams in parallel to meet the backup window,” says Quirk. “We have customers that have such large databases that even their incremental backups come to 40 or 50 terabytes per night. This deduplication technology is extremely powerful in deduplicating those parallel backups without compromising performance or deduplication ratios so it is highly suited to very large Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server databases.”
