Sybase Announces Availability of Sybase IQ 15.3 for Beta Customers

Sybase, Inc., an SAP company, has announced the release of Sybase IQ 15.3 to beta customers. The new release introduces the PlexQ Distributed Query Platform, a massively parallel processing (MPP) architecture that accelerates highly complex queries by distributing work to many computers in a grid configuration. GA is planned for the first half of 2011.

"The PlexQ Distributed Query Platform is a shared-everything MPP system," Kevin Leong, Sybase senior product manager for Sybase IQ, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "We allow the queries to be parallelized across all the nodes in the grid." PlexQ's automatic workload re-balancer aggressively works to avoid contention among users for system resources, thereby providing predictable high performance for a spectrum of concurrent workloads, according to Sybase.

Using an MPP shared-everything architecture, Sybase IQ 15.3 PlexQ Distributed Query Platform surpasses typical shared-nothing MPP architectures because it incorporates traditional Sybase IQ strengths such as support for heavy concurrent usage, and ad hoc queries, and flexible scaling, notes Leong. With this architecture, Sybase says, PlexQ can exceed service level agreements through simple and flexible resource provisioning that allows nodes to be grouped together as unified images that can be assigned to different application profiles.
