Cutting Power Usage to One-Tenth of a Megawatt—Using the Cloud

Industry statistics estimate that many data centers consume between one to five megawatts of power. IBM is reportedly opening a 60,000-foot, cloud-focused data center in North Carolina that is designed to cut usage to a tenth of that amount. The data center is based on the latest energy-efficient technologies and principles. These include sensors that can monitor and manage cooling and temperature. The center will consume a total six megawatts of power and will support up to 50 clients, IBM says. System z machines, along with IBM System x and Power-based servers will be supported.
