Is Software-Defined X the Flavor of the Week?

A recent industry article looked at Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure initiatives, described above in this week's 5 Minute Briefing, and questions whether vendors are simply piling on with the latest “software-defined” something or other as part of the latest round of marketing hype.

Indeed, many seasoned data center managers have been pursuing “software defined” infrastructures for years now – often under different names, from web services to virtualization. However, in the battle against complexity, even more complexity gets added.
