For over 30 years, I have worked with databases—first starting with Oracle version 3. In that time, a few constants have remained: Databases keep getting bigger, the technology keeps getting more complex, and the different types and sources of data continue to expand each year. The more data we make available, the thirstier companies become for that data. During these 30 years, there continues to be a shortage of qualified database administrators. A recent survey published by Unisphere Research titled “The Vanishing Database Administrator” found that “41% of data professionals intend to leave the data management field within 10 years.” To me, this should be a wake-up call for corporate America. You will be up against companies like Fidelity, Apple and salesforce.com, which have greater resources and more money to compete for the limited pool of database administrators available.
The database administrator crisis is not following the traditional technology curve where the supply of technologist fades away as the technology itself fades away. As Oracle approaches its 39th birthday, its use in the marketplace continues to increase, as does the use of Microsoft SQL Server and other traditional relational databases. It is important that companies recognize the fact that trying to do it all in-house is not a sustainable long-term strategy.
