Hortonworks Partners with Simba to Provide Customers SQL Access to Big Data in Apache Hadoop

Simba Technologies has partnered with Hortonworks, a commercial vendor of Apache Hadoop, to provide ODBC access to Hortonworks Data Platform. The use of Simba's Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector is aimed at  providing Hortonworks customers with easy access to their data for BI and analytics using the SQL-based application of their choice.

Although Apache Hadoop enables the capture, storage and analysis of structured and unstructured data, as well as real-time streams of information, flowing throughout enterprise environments,  Hadoop is not natively SQL-capable, using its own Hive Query Language (HiveQL) as the basis for access and analytics. Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector performs the task of mapping advanced SQL functionality to HiveQL to provide users with seamless integration between their SQL-based BI application and their Hadoop-based big data.  Built upon the SimbaEngine SDK driver development framework – an ODBC toolkit for high-performance ODBC driver development – Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector complies with the latest ODBC 3.52 data standard and adds functionality such as Unicode and 32- and 64-bit support for high-performance computing environments on all platforms.

“Hortonworks makes Apache Hadoop easier to consume and use in enterprise environments,” says Shaun Connolly, Hortonworks’ VP, Strategy.  “Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver technology makes it easier for our customers to harness the power of their big data using popular and familiar BI and analytics applications.  Simba is the ODBC expert, and we chose its technology to enable access to the Hortonworks Data Platform because it offers our customers the broadest compatibility with SQL-based applications.”
