Using ThingSpace to Understand the Internet of Things

Today's products and services connect to the world around its users. In an effort to help people support more devices and understand the Internet of Things space, Verizon launched ThingSpace, an IoT development platform that allows its enterprise customers to build and connect their own IoT applications.

Verizon chose Couchbase NoSQL to power the platform due to the massive scale of its deployment and the company's need for high availability, flexibility, and sub-millisecond latency.

Recently, DBTA held a webinar featuring Mohan Umapath, director of System/Architecture at Verizon Couchbase, and Ali LeClerc, product marketing manager at Couchbase Mobile, who discussed how Couchbase enables Verizon and its enterprise customers to support millions of connected devices, and accelerate time to market for new applications and features.

The IoT landscape is made up of 6 billion devices and in a few years it is slated to be made up of over 20 billion devices, LeClerc explained.

The IoT data platform is made up of the devices themselves that are collecting and ingesting data in real time, then the internet makes up the middle tier, and the backend is what rounds the platform out.

There are five IoT use cases that Couchbase looks to address, including providing on-device data management, data transport between the device and backend, management of streaming data, data sharing between devices, and offline-enabled apps and devices.

A full-stack data management solution helps solve these problems while integrating with other platforms such as Hadoop or Spark, accelerates the process, LeClerc said.

IoT is transforming businesses through an aware and autonomous network that provides actionable insight and better business intelligence, Umapath said, and the ThingSpace IoT platform can provide users with end-to -end device integration and management with a real-time intelligent data pipeline.
