Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu and the provider of open source security, support, and services, is releasing Charmed Spark, an advanced solution for Apache Spark that accelerates data engineering across both public cloud and private data centers.

IBM and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are expanding their partnership to help more mutual clients operationalize and derive value from generative artificial intelligence (AI). As part of this expansion, IBM Consulting aims to deepen and expand its generative AI expertise on AWS by training 10,000 consultants by the end of 2024; the two organizations also plan to deliver joint solutions and services upgraded with generative AI capabilities designed to help clients across critical use cases.

IONOS, a digitalization partner for small and midsize businesses, announced a new U.S. location for its cloud platform in the IONOS-owned data center in Lenexa, Kansas. The Lenexa Data Center is the third U.S. data center supporting the investment, success, and expansion of the IONOS Cloud platform in the United States, according to the company.

News agency Jiji reported that SoftBank is looking to invest $40-60 billion yen ($266-400 million) in developing "one of Japan's largest data centers" in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido. Details are sparse, but the company is reportedly looking to launch the facility in 2026. SoftBank is said to be targeting a new facility in the northern island of Hokkaido to address concerns around energy consumption amid the growing demands of generative AI.
