News Flashes

IBM has agreed to acquire Cloudant, Inc., a database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider that enables developers to create mobile and web apps. Following the close, which is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2014, Cloudant will join IBM's newly formed Information and Analytics Group led by Senior Vice President Bob Picciano, a business unit within the IBM Software & Systems Group.

The challenges of funding and executing IT projects that support competitive advantage for the enterprise are explored in a new EMC-sponsored survey of 285 data managers and professionals who are members of the Independent Oracle Users Group. A fundamental process to support big data analytics initiatives is the delivery of reliable information through the integration of networks, data systems and applications. However, many organizations find themselves instead mired in low-level database administration tasks.

While minimizing risk is important for financial services organizations, companies need to think beyond fraud detection and understand the wider benefits predictive analytics can provide in terms of better customer experience, driving opportunities and increasing revenue in a highly competitive market. Among other uses, a comprehensive customer database, combined with advanced analytics, will allow organizations to spot trends, identify cohorts, and micro-target discrete populations.
