Hortonworks Data Platform 2.3 Advances Enterprise Hadoop

The Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) version 2.3 is now available, with enhancements for user experience for both operators and developers, new security and data governance capabilities, a new cluster monitoring service for support subscription customers.

According to the company, the HDP 2.3 release builds on a large open enterprise Hadoop ecosystem, with more than 1,100 independent software vendors, systems integrators, and open source Hadoop specialists. With a commitment to growing Hadoop and its sub-projects. HDP is assembled entirely of projects built through the Apache Software Foundation.

New in HDP 2.3, is Hortonworks SmartSense which provides proactive monitoring features to build, manage and scale a Hadoop cluster. Using Hortonworks SmartSense, customers can more quickly receive insights and ongoing recommendations about cluster utilization and health, utilize log files and metrics for faster support case resolution, prevent configuration problems and optimize their clusters for capacity planning.

In the area of of usability, HDP 2.3 eliminates the need for the command line interfaces for operational setup and management that were common in previous generations of Hadoop, helping to make data available to more users in the enterprise.

HDP 2.3 also adds advanced security and data governance capabilities for Hadoop, hardening the platform for the enterprise.

In the area of security, centralized authorization enables security administrators to define and manage security policies and capture security audit information for HDFS, Hive, HBase, Knox, Storm and now Solr, Kafka and YARN; HDFS Data At Rest Encryption (DARE) provides security administrators the ability to manage keys and authorization policies for key management store (KMS) by introducing data encryption to encrypt data in HDFS files, combined with Apache Ranger embedded open source Hadoop KMS; and finally HDP 2.3 provides a framework to optimize audit creation and storage, with interactive query powered by Solr.
