Internet of Things
The phenomenon of connected machines is sometimes called the Internet of
Things, the Internet of Anything, the Internet of Everything, or M2M
(machine to machine). But no matter what the name, the growth of technology
related to objects, which never before were network- and computer-enabled,
is projected to have far-reaching technological, societal, and economic
impact.
The strongest examples of the impact of the Internet of Things are in the
industrial sector. Embedded software, sensors, and network connectivity
promises to improve the way factories, data centers, oil wells, and cities,
airplanes, cars, and even homes are maintained because data can be collected
continuously with alerts issues proactively to prevent failures and outages.
According to Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group, 50 billion devices
will be connected by 2020, up from 2010's 12.5 billion. By 2020, data
production will be 44 times greater than it was in 2009, and by 2020, more
than one-third of the data produced will live in or pass through the cloud,
according to Computer Sciences Corp.

Oracle announced today that it is acquiring NetSuite in a transaction valued at approximately $9.3 billion. The transaction is expected to close in 2016. In a statement, Zach Nelson, CEO of NetSuite, said that NetSuite will benefit from Oracle's global scale and reach to accelerate the availability of its cloud solutions.

Ending months of months of speculation on who would acquire Yahoo's operating business, including search engine, email services, and web properties, Verizon Communications Inc. and Yahoo! Inc. have entered into a definitive agreement under which Verizon will acquire Yahoo for approximately $4.83 billion in cash, subject to customary closing adjustments. The deal is expected to close in Q1 of 2017.

Workday, a provider of enterprise cloud applications for finance and human resources, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Platfora, a provider of operational analytics and data discovery tools that enable companies to visually interact with and analyze large volumes of data. Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in Workday's third fiscal quarter, were not disclosed.

For those who haven't encountered the term, the "trough of disillusionment" is a standard phase within the Gartner hype cycle. EMC has introduced UniK, an open source contribution that enables developers to deploy applications to the cloud and IoT devices by compiling application sources into unikernels. UniK as an open source project is recognized under the DevHigh5 program through EMC {code}, a program that supports and provides recognition to developers and partners for their open source contributions. By releasing UniK as a collaborative open source project, EMC expects the tool to help bring customers closer to cloud native application platforms through the choice of running applications with containers or unikernels.

The world's data has doubled in 18 months' time. The industry estimates that the global amount of storage will reach 40 ZB by 2020. Historically, storage architectures were built on solutions that could only scale vertically. This legacy approach to storage presents significant challenges to being able to store the tremendous quantities of data being created today in a way that is cost-effective and maintains high levels of performance.
