News Flashes

BMC has announced the results of its 15th Annual Mainframe Survey. The findings reveal strong support for mainstreaming the mainframe, new strategic priorities, and a resurgence of next-generation mainframe talent. "The IBM Z ecosystem continues to evolve to support a modern, hybrid cloud. But it's more than that, because the practitioners who run IBM Z are shifting as well to represent the modern workforce—with 40% representation from women and over one-third representation from those with less than 5 years experience on the Z platform," said Ross Mauri, general manager, IBM Z and LinuxONE.

IBM has announced that it will separate the Managed Infrastructure Services unit of its Global Technology Services division into a new public company ("NewCo"), creating two companies, each with strategic focus and flexibility to drive client and shareholder value. The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

IBM Security has announced new and upcoming capabilities for Cloud Pak for Security, including a data security solution that allows companies to detect, respond to, and protect against threats to their most sensitive data across hybrid cloud environments. According to IBM, as cloud adoption and trend toward remote work have dispersed the traditional IT perimeter, security response teams can benefit from deeper insights into security across hybrid cloud environments. User behavior, identities, and data security have traditionally been siloed from threat management.

Rocket Software has introduced Rocket Open AppDev for Z to provide a new approach for the mainframe community to securely adopt, manage, and obtain support for IBM Z ported open software. Rocket Open AppDev for Z helps mitigate the risks associated with open software, offering a solution that provides developers with a package of open tools and languages that they want, along with the security, management, and support that IBM Z customers require. "It's not even a question anymore: Open source is the future of technology, and organizations that don't embrace this are going to be left behind," said Milan Shetti, president of Rocket's Z Systems Business Unit.

Good data quality starts with metadata—and the importance of quality data cannot be overstated. Poor data quality costs the typical company between 10% and 20% of their revenue. In addition, high quality data is crucial for complying with regulations.

News From SHARE

As SHARE turns 65 and the mainframe turns 56, it's significant that Moore's Law has been around for 55 of those years — since 1965. Over the last five decades, the world of computing has come to rely on ever-denser and faster computing technology to mitigate the constantly increasing amount of functionality packed into a given amount of capacity and response time.
