News Flashes

Oracle has announced plans to expand its cloud region footprint to support customer demand for Oracle Cloud services worldwide. Over the next year, Oracle will open 14 cloud regions with new locations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. Upcoming cloud regions include Milan (Italy), Stockholm (Sweden), Marseille (France), Spain, Singapore (Singapore), Johannesburg (South Africa), Jerusalem (Israel), Mexico, and Colombia. Additional second regions will open in Abu Dhabi (U.A.E.), Saudi Arabia, France, Israel, and Chile. Oracle plans to have at least 44 cloud regions by the end of 2022, continuing one of the fastest expansions of any major cloud provider.

The Linux Foundation has raised $10 million in new investments to expand and support the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), a cross-industry collaboration that brings together multiple open source software initiatives under one umbrella to identify and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in open source software and develop improved tooling, training, research, best practices, and vulnerability disclosure practices. "As a contributing member of the open source software community and an inaugural Linux Foundation member, Oracle has a large number of developers that contribute to third-party open source projects daily," said Wim Coekaerts, senior vice president of software development, Oracle.

Databases are vital to every business. They are responsible for recording and communicating some of the organization's most critical data. Whether it's related to employee records, sales transactions, product inventory, customer profiles, or even just marketing activities, organizations often can't afford to lose any database data.

Think About It

October is "National Cyber Security Awareness Month," putting the spotlight on the need to keep data safe. In particular, as businesses continue to invest in SaaS-based solutions, they must rethink their risk management strategies to prioritize protecting one of their most important assets: SaaS app data. The transition to cloud and the adoption of SaaS-based applications is not a new phenomenon, but the pandemic clearly accelerated the shift. Notably, cloud spending increased 37% to $29 billion during the first quarter of 2020 alone, despite an expected 8% decline in overall IT spending. With hybrid and remote working models now becoming the norm, this reliance on cloud and SaaS will surely continue as organizations look for scalable and cost-effective ways to provide employees with anytime, anywhere access to information.
