News Flashes

As a DBA, all of my best ideas came out of IOUG. I have spent a lot of time after sessions and during gatherings at COLLABORATE  talking with my peers about things I was working on or stumped on at work. I have often been shocked at how many times someone had an answer so quickly. But I have  figured out that they weren't DBA gods, but rather someone similar to me. They have just had the same issue I had but sooner and had worked on it for hours. I was just getting the benefit of all their time.

Hitachi Consulting, a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., a Platinum level member of Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), and provider of consulting-led solutions and services, has been named an OPN Cloud Elite partner. Joining a small number of Oracle partners who have attained this designation, Hitachi Consulting earned the status by achieving a set of criteria that demonstrate its full investment in Oracle Cloud solutions.

LicenseFortress has announced the availability of LicenseFortress Legal Edition on Oracle. Originally part of VLSS, a consultancy founded in 2005 with a focus on Oracle and VMware technologies, LicenseFortress was spun out as a standalone company in October 2017 with a focus on real-time software license compliance and customer alerting.

DBAs can recover a database, tune SQL, and may even know how to write some PL/SQL when push comes to shove. And, yes, those are all great skills to have. But in 2018, DBAs need more, writes Matt Malcheski in a new IOUG SELECT article. Malcheski goes over the "hot topics," including blockchain, AI, and Internet of Things, and notes that DBAs of the future will need to understand not only the technical aspects of these and the other technologies but also must be able understand and add value to the functional data requirements necessary for all-encompassing solutions. "This is characterized in a data point from Gartner: By 2021, 40% of IT staff will be 'versatilists' holding multiple roles, most of which will be business rather than technology related."
